Sometimes you do not have to move from your sofa to travel. We’ve selected 14 blockbusters that will allow you to visit some of Europe’s most beautiful cities.
1. LONDON: LOVE ACTUALLY
This romantic comedy is the perfect combo of tears, laughs and a free london tour. Many movies are filmed annually in London, if you need more guided tours you can also enjoy Skyfall, Notting Hill, Bridget Jones’ Diary or The King’s Speech.
2. SEVILLA: STAR WARS II
Situated inside Sevilla’s most famous park, this Star Wars location is definitely worth a visit; even if you’re not a Star Wars fan!
3. WARSAW: THE PIANIST
This wonderful movie was shot in the Polish capital: Warsaw which is almost unrecognisable thanks to the great settings.
4. VERONA: LETTERS TO JULIET
Despite the fact that this movie can be considered a romantic blockbuster, truth is its landscapes are worth seeing (and visiting if you’re in Italy). We’ve chosen Verona and Juliet’s balcony but there are many more Italian cities that are pictured beautifully in this romantic comedy.
5. PORTO: HARRY POTTER
We have to clarify that Harry Potter was not filmed in Porto but this bookshops‘ beautiful staircase inspired J.K. Rowling. In this case the real location is definitely worth a visit!
6. SKOPELOS: MAMMA MIA!
This musical was filmed in one of the beautiful Greek islands: Skopelos. If you thought that musicals (or ABBA) weren’t your thing just turn the volume off because the landscapes are a must see!
7. SNAEFELLSNESS: JOURNEY TO THE CENTER OF THE EARTH
At ELJ we’ve discovered where the centre of the Earth is! You just have to get to Iceland and visit the magnificent Snæfellsjökull volcano.
8. SALZBURG: SOUND OF MUSIC
The oldest movie in the list is also a musical. If you want to discover Salzburg’s amazing landscapes you can’t miss this film. But beware: you will want to book a flight as soon as it starts!
9. PRAGUE: THE LEAGUE OF EXTRAORDINARY GENTLEMEN
In the movie, this amazing Czech building situated in Prague is supposed to be located in London. You can discover the city through the film as it was filmed entirely in Czech Republic (apart from water tank scenes that were filmed in Malta).
10. COUNTY WEXFORD: SAVING PRIVATE RYAN
Another unrecognisable location: could you have guessed that Omaha beach was really an Irish beach situated in County Wexford?
11. BRUGES: IN BRUGES
Obviously In Bruges was filmed in Bruges… If you haven’t visited this Belgian city yet don’t wait to see the film. The movie is perfect for revisiting it and indulging in nostalgia.
12. PARIS: INCEPTION
Did you know that Inception was located in Paris? We thought that it should definitely be on the list (not only because of it being a movie that will go down in history) but because the Paris that it portrays is different to that in Amélie.
13. AMSTERDAM: THE FAULT IN OUR STARS
Another romantic comedy which could be easily considered a teen movie. If you believe that romantic dramas are not for you then avoid watching The Fault in our Stars, but bear in mind that you’ll miss beautiful Amsterdam which is for once depicted as a romantic city.
14. BUDAPEST: UNDERWORLD
If you’ve ever visited the Hungarian capital you will surely be able to recognise it in this movie. If on the other hand you haven’t, its dark tones will make it difficult, but nonetheless you will be amazed by the skyline.
