French has certainly captivated the entire planet. From its countless depictions in film and literature, to it being the only language besides English that is currently taught in all countries. Today, we want to share with you some fun facts about French language.

Far from being a phonetic language, French sets itself apart from its parent Latin tongues, as well as from other Romance languages, because the way words are pronounced tends to differ from their written form. “Voix” (voice, from Latin vōcem) is actually pronounced vwa.

The Language’s Background

The first document written in Old French dates back to 842, and it’s a Romance version of oaths sworn by Charlemagne’s grandsons. It wasn’t really until the 12th and 13th centuries, however, that French became a dominant literary language. This was partially thanks to the strategic central location of the Île-de-France and to the prestige of Paris.
