1. Italy’s shape is often described as a heeled boot (mainland Italy) kicking a ball (Sicily).
2. This may seem like a crazy number, but when you think about the fact that Italy is home to the Apennines, the Alps and the Dolomites, it starts to make a little more sense.
3. The Alps form the Northern border of the country, whereas The Pyrenees form the border between Spain and France, and the Urals run through Russia.
4. The Matterhorn is shared by Italy and Switzerland – which explains why the swiss Toblerone is named after it.
5. Etna is found on the east coast of Sicily, and is Italy’s largest volcano. It is the most active volcano in Europe, and one of the most active in the world!
6. Pompeii was famously destroyed by Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD. The volcano is still active almost 2000 years later.
7. Garda is the largest lake in Italy followed by Lake Maggiore, and then Como.
