The Battle of the Oranges is a yearly carnival that takes place in Ivrea, Italy usually in February. Not many people know about this incredible celebration and the story behind it. It is said that Ivrea was once ruled by a tyrant, who created a rule to take the virginity of all promised young women before their wedding day. One day, a woman named Violetta Miller, who was also about to get married, decapitated this evil ruler! The entire city triumphed by destroying his castle with rocks, which are now represented by oranges. Every year, a young lady is chosen to represent Violetta and the 9 teams throw oranges at a big wooden structure to symbolize their freedom from the tyrant.
