We have all grown up watching movies, listening to our family’s favorite bands, admiring one’s paintings, or just appreciating any kind of art overall. Little did we know that some of our favorite stars share something in common with us; they speak many languages. No, not only two, but three or even more. Find out if your favorite artist is part of Today’s 7 Most Multilingual Celebrities!

If you are an expat and a language lover, you might be surprised to see how talented some of these superstars are. They have visited, lived, worked in different countries, and learned how to speak their respective languages. Let’s give a big round of applause to…

1. Shakira Isabel Mebarak Ripoll

Wow! I think it is the first time I see Shakira’s full name written down. Well, this wonderful singer is known worldwide for her music and belly dancing performances. We will not go over her entire biography, but we must know that on top of singing at the 2010 FIFA World Cup and participating in TV shows, such as The Voice, she is also a multilingual! What languages does Shakira speak?

Languages: Spanish, English, Portuguese, Italian, and French. 

Most famous songs: ‘Hips Don’t Lie’, ‘Waka Waka’, ‘Whenever, Wherever’, ‘Chantaje’, etc. These are only some of Shakira’s popular songs

Fun fact: Her children speak 7 languages!!!! Which ones? Spanish, Catalan, French, English, German, Chinese, and Russian. I am pretty sure they will end up learning Italian as well, as Shakira does too. Her and her soccer star husband, Gerard Piqué, know how important it is to learn languages in a global society. 2. Kobe Bean Bryant 

Either if you are a basketball fan or not, chances are you know how talented Kobe Bryant is. Other than being one of the best players of all times, he volunteered in multiple programs built to help others, such as The Boys & Girls Clubs of America and the Maker-A-Wish Foundation. In other words, the list of things this celebrity has done on this earth are endless. On top of that, Kobe dedicated some of his time to learning languages, which is why he is part of Today’s 7 Most Multilingual Celebrities

Languages: English, Italian, and Spanish.

Honors: two-time NBA Finals Most Valuable Player (MVP), 2008 NBA MVP, 12-time member of the All-Defensive Team, 15-time member of the All-NBA Team, and 18-time All Star.

Fun fact: Kobe speaks Italian because he actually lived in Italy (Reggio Calabria, Pistoia, and Reggio Emilia). How did he get from the U.S.A. to Italy? His father, Joe Bryant, decided to retire in this beautiful country after his career at the NBA.

3. Sandra Oh 

 

Are you a fan of Grey’s Anatomy? If so, I must tell you that she was my favourite character! Assertiveness, perseverance, and talent are some of this actress’ amazing traits. Oh yes, she is also a polyglot!! 

Languages: English, Korean, French, and Spanish.

Movies/TV Shows: Grey’s Anatomy, The Princess Diaries, Under the Tuscan Sun, Mulan II, etc. 

Fun fact: Other than being one of the famous french speaking celebrities, Sandra Oh is the first Asian to win two Golden Globes!

4. Michael Fassbender 

Did you know Michael Fassbender is an Irish-German actor? No, I’m not following Iris stereotypes here, although Michael does have redish hair. Anyway, he is part of Today’s 7 Most Multilingual Celebrities for a reason!

Languages: Irish, German, and English.

Movies/TV Shows: X-Men, Steve Jobs, Inglorious Bastards, Band of Brothers, etc.

Fun facts: Michael relocated to London when he was only 18/19 in order to study at the Drama Centre in London. 

Michael, is not the only celebrity that speaks German, it seems that other talented superstars also speak this so in-demand language.

5. Natalie Portman 

Who does not admire Natalie Portman? She is incredibly smart, beautiful, and talented! She’s not only an actress, but she’s also a film director/producer, and a psychologist. As a matter of fact, Natalie graduated from Harvard University and on top of all that, she is considered a language prodigy — She speaks 6 languages y’all.  

Languages: English, Hebrew, French, Japanese, German, and Spanish

Movies: Black Swan, V for Vendetta, Star Wars, The Other Boleyn Girl, Thor
: The Dark World, Where the Heart Is, etc.

Fun fact: Natalie seems to have lost her Oscar! Yes, she just isn’t sure where it went and hasn’t seen it in a while. She must have placed it somewhere she does not remember.

6. Tom Hiddleston 

Tom Hiddleston is one of Today’s 7 Most Multilingual Celebrities. What an accomplished actor. Other than winning a Golden Globe Award and a Laurence Olivier Award, he speaks four languages fluently! 

Languages: English, Spanish, French and Greek.

Movies: Thor, Avengers, High-Rise, etc.

Fun fact: Did you know Tom went to school with Prince William? Yep, that’s true… you better believe it! 

7. Nina Dobrev 

If you’ve watched The Vampire Diaries you know exactly who Nina Dobrev is. This Bulgarian-Canadian actress & model has won the heart of many movies and TV show spectators with her perfect role-playing. Are you one of her fans as well? Did you know she spoke three languages? 

Languages: English, Bulgaria, and French.

Movies/TV Shows: Flatliners, Chloe, The Perks of Being a Wallflower, The Vampire Diaries, etc.  

Fun fact: Nina Dobrev shares more than one thing in common with us expats, she doesn’t only speak many languages, but she has also lived in multiple countries! I guess we can say, she is an expat herself.
